Chimps of Nyungwe-3 Days

One of the oldest rainforests in Africa, Nyungwe is rich in biodiversity and spectacularly beautiful. The mountainous region is teaming with wildlife, including a small population of chimpanzees as well as 12 other species of primate, including L’Hoest’s monkey endemic to the Albertine Rift. This is the beauty we introduce you to on this tour.

ITINERARY

DAY 1: PICK UP FROM KIGALI –  CITY TOUR – TRANSFER TO NYUNGWE NATIONAL PARK

We will kick off day one of this safari with a brief tour of the city of Kigali’s most significant places like the genocide memorial center, the central city market, the former presidential palace and artisan shops.

We will then head out to Butare with amazing views of the countless hills of Rwanda with stops at the Kamegeri’s rock, the National Ethnographic Museum in Huye, and the Murambi Genocide Memorial. The final part of the six-hour journey ends in a hotel or lodge close to the park. You will check in and head out for the canopy walk.

The 160m long and 70m high suspension bridge is accessible as part of our guided tour along the Igishigishigi trail, or to those hiking the Imbaraga or Umuyove trails. Along the hour’s walk to the canopy walkway from the Uwinka Reception Centre, you will see countless butterflies, orchids and colorful birds, including many endemics to the region.

Dinner and overnight at an accommodation of your choice.

DAY 2: CHIMPANZEE TREKKING & NATURE WALK IN THE FOREST

The second day of this tour will be action-packed. In fact, a very early breakfast will be advised after which your driver will take you for the briefing which starts at Uwinka by 5:30 am. Chimpanzee tracking in Rwanda starts earlier than chimpanzee trekking in Kibale forest of Uganda because the chimps are more mobile. There are two trails for chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest – The Uwinka and Cyamudongo trail. After the briefing, each group will be driven to the starting point of the trek.

During chimpanzee tracking, expect to spot 12 smaller species of primate including Hamlyn’s Monkeys, owl-faced monkeys, golden monkeys, Dent’s Mona Monkeys, Angola Colobus, Silver monkeys, Olive 3 day trip to NyungweBaboons, Red-tailed Monkeys, grey-cheeked Mangabeys, vervet monkeys and l’hoest’s monkeys. Nyungwe forest is one of the top places for birding in Rwanda. Apart from small primates, expect to spot birds like the Rwenzori Turaco, great blue Turaco, paradise flycatcher and forest hornbills among others.

Later on this day after your lunch, you will continue further on a nature trail. Nyungwe National Park has over 14 trials for nature walks. The trails are designed to allow visitors experience the flora and fauna in the park. The waterfall trail is popular and takes 3 hours to complete. If time permits, you could be taken to track Angola Colobus in Gisakura.

Dinner and overnight at an accommodation of your choice.

DAY 3 DEPARTURE TO KIGALI WITH STOPS AT THE GISAKURA TEA FACTORY

On day 3 after your breakfast, our driver will take you to Gisakura Tea Estate for a tour of the tea farm and factory. You will then continue the journey to Kigali making stops to any of the places you didn’t check out on the first day because of time constraints (if any). The final destination is either the airport, your hotel or accommodation in Kigali.
